The Resource Center’s legacy is built on bringing innovative resource recovery solutions to fruition. Since 1975 the Resource Center has designed programs in recycling, food rescue, and creative reuse to meet the needs of as many neighborhoods as possible, across geographical and socio-economic barriers.
City Farm is the Resource Center’s most recent initiative showcasing a complete material and food cycle. The entire concept of the farm is built on the idea of resource recovery and reuse. The farm itself is on vacant land that would otherwise be underutilized urban space. The food produced on City Farm stays local, supplying Chicago restaurants, farmers markets and neighborhoods. The cycle is completed by using composted food scraps for the growing medium; from farm to fork and back to farm again, City Farm is a model of sustainable urban agriculture.
